People across Lafayette have gathered at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette to protest the public announcement of Turning Point USA’s “The Dangers of Transgender Ideology” panel that is coming to campus on Nov. 20, the same day as National Transgender Day of Remembrance.
“That is a sacred day. The idea that hate speech will be allowed on that day by such an open platform is just despicable,” said local LGBTQIA+ advocate Malek Richard.
The protest included LGBTQIA+ members and allies voicing their disappointment in the university’s announcement of the panel. Chants and testimonies from the participants were heard across campus.
Karen Smith, a faculty member on campus, attended the protest.
“I don’t ever, ever want to go to another night of repentance and sit next to another mom who lost their child to suicide because they didn’t feel welcome and loved,” Smith said.
Richard said if they cannot prevent the panel from taking place, they want it to be postponed to a different date at the very least.
“We’re not here to fight you. We don’t want to antagonize. We’re here to be respectful, but we’re going to respectfully put pressure until we get what we deserve,” Richard said.
